MAY MINUTES

TEXAS DEMOCRATIC WOMEN – ELLIS COUNTY

TDW-Ellis County met May 21 at the home of Jeannetta Flores, Midlothian, TX.  President Nancy Post called the meeting to order the members and guests pledged allegiance.

Treasurer Mary Brooks reported that the PAC account had a balance of $3,824.16 and the scholarship account had a balance of $4,337.26.  The Treasurer’s report was approved.

Vivian Gibson reported that the Scholarship Committee met on April 3 and reviewed 14 applicants for the 2024 scholarships.  The 2024 scholarships will be awarded to students from Ennis High School in memory of Emma Wilson.  It was then decided at this meeting that two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this year, one to Lynnashia Brooks who will be attending Shriner University, and one to Kaillan Honza who will be attending the University of Arkansas.

To raise money for next year’s scholarships, we will hold a bakeless bake sale in June.  The proceeds of the next bake sale will go to Manna House of Midlothian and Italy.

There was no old business.

New business discussed was that the state TDW convention is coming up on July 12 and 13 and the President Nancy Post urged members to attend.  It will be held in Weatherford.

Barbara Fudge reported that the program for the June meeting will be discussing ranked choice voting.

The program this evening was presented by David Lowery from the Young Active Labor Leaders (YALL) who are working to encourage learning about labor. Their goals include protecting workers rights, and encouraging workers to join a union because of its protections against unfair treatment and promoting security and the dignity of work. They are encouraged that Starbucks employees have voted to unionize.

The meeting was adjourned on a motion by Mary Brooks, seconded by Helen Brock.

Refreshments followed.
